RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. has recently undertaken repair and overhaul of Wartsila 12V32 engine installed on one of the vessels owned by a Greek company. The engine, having a capacity of about 5000 horsepower, installed as an auxiliary engine, required a full overhaul and reconditioning after running of more than 36,000 hours. One of the crankpins having a standard diameter of 270 mm met with an incident of bearing failure, and it was decided to undertake the grinding.
RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. deputed technicians with onsite portable crankshaft grinding machine. It was observed that crankpin developed excessive ovality. It was ground to 0.5 mm undersize, maintaining all the parameters and tolerances strictly as per Wartsila maintenance manual.
Overhauling of parts and engine:-
- All the cylinder heads were fully reconditioned and inspected.
- Piston and piston rings were calibrated.
- Due to wear and tear of the liners, which exceeded the last limits specified in the manual, all the liners were replaced with new ones.
- Crankpin bearings crossed the specified hours of operation and were replaced.
- Inspection and cleaning of all the pumps and sub-assemblies was undertaken.
After Wartsila diesel engine repair and overhaul, the engine was put on trial and operation. The diesel engine repair and overhaul job was completed in a record time of eighteen days, and the client appreciated this.
